Broadland Business Park
This project has progressed rapidly since, but here’s a look back at some recent footage from our project at Broadland Business Park.
We recently had the pleasure of hosting an informative tour of Elaine Herbert House at The Great Hospital, Norwich.
The visit was led by Trevor Terrington from Smith of Honingham alongside Jonathan Smith, Director, and Shaun Long from Rossi Long Consulting representing the Norwich Forum for the Construction Industry.
It was a good opportunity to bring industry colleagues together and share progress on site.
The new building has been carefully designed to sit comfortably alongside the existing structures, some of which date back to 1249. Working within such an historic setting requires real attention to detail and respect for the surroundings.
The ground-floor flint elevations and the transition into the first-floor brickwork are particularly impressive. It’s not something you see every day, and the finish really reflects the quality of workmanship involved.
At Smith of Honingham, we’re proud to be part of projects that combine traditional materials with modern construction standards. Working closely with Cowper Griffith Architects LLP and Rossi Long Consulting, it’s been a collaborative effort throughout.
We look forward to sharing more with you soon.

From £50 to Four Generations: The H. Smith & Sons
Story 🏗️
Over a century ago, our story began with a carpenter, a shrewd mind, and a leap of faith.
Today, we’re proud to look back at the journey that built H. Smith & Sons into what it is
today.
Our Journey Through the Years:
-1919: After supporting the WWI effort producing aircraft for Mann Egerton, Herbert
Smith returned home to find his old job at the Honingham Estate no longer
existed. With just £50 capital and four children to support, he started his own account.
-1945: Following the end of WWII, sons Herbert (Bert) and George returned from the
armed forces to form the partnership H. Smith & Sons, taking on major housing
contracts.
-1970-1974: Evolution continued as the third generation—John and Alan—joined the
team. In 1974, we officially transitioned into a limited company.
-2000: To meet growing demand, we expanded to a second site at Frans Green
Industrial Estate, creating two distinct bases for our builder’s yard and administration.
-2006-2007: The fourth generation, Kimberley and Jonathan Smith, joined the ranks to
carry our expertise into the modern era.
From a single carpenter`s tools to a multi-generational limited company, our commitment to
quality has remained the same.
We are honoured to continue building on the foundation
Herbert Smith laid back in 1919.
